The ROUTE
The team left Singapore for Kathmandu, Nepal in late March, 2001.
We took the overland route to Everest Base Camp (EBC), Tibet side, following the road that leads onwards to Lhasa. We arrived at EBC, which is 5,200m and situated at the terminal moraine of the Rongpu Glacier, in early April.
After setting up EBC, a series of intermediate camps (Camp 1 and 2) will be established on the Dong Rongpu Glacier, a tributary of the Rongpu Glacier.
This will lead us to Camp 3 (Advanced Base Camp, or ABC at 6500m). Prior to ABC, the route is fairly flat, with moderate gradient along the glacier floor.
After ABC, there is a steep ice and rock climb up to North Col (Camp 4) at 7000m. This is a pass between the Everest North East Ridge and Changtse (7583m).
From the North Col, two higher camps (Camp 5 at 7800m, Camp 6 at 8300m) will be established on the very steep (75 to 80 degrees) ridge linking North Col to the Everest North East Ridge. Summit attempts (two tries) will be made sometime in late May from Camp 6. |
