In light of the growing number of adventure-based expeditions, the issue of accountability and financial prudence is a major sporting issue that needs to be addressed.
The Singapore-Latin American Everest Expedition 2001 has received the backing and endorsement of the national body for the sport here, the Singapore Mountaineering Federation. The Federation, comprising 15 affiliate adventure and climbing clubs has created new guidelines for any body or organisation seeking its backing and endorsement as a "national project".
This has come about at a time when several high profile adventure or mountaineering expeditions are being launched and there is a need to define those which are "national" expeditions; fulfilling both national sporting excellence goals and community objectives, and those which are private by nature.
