Fluke helps out with test instruments!
July 04, 2000. Fluke, one of the world's leading manufacturers of electronic test instruments, has kindly sponsored this expedition with two test instruments. They are the Scopemeter 199 (a combination of Digital oscilloscope and multimeter) and Digital Multimeter (DMM) model 89. The sponsored instruments are the latest in the Fluke test instruments line and are battery operated. The primary test instrument will be the Scopemeter 199, with the DMM 89 to be used as backup. These test instruments will assist the Technical Officer in determining the cause of failure of any vital electronic equipments used in the expedition, and to allow him to assess the possibility of repair. They will also assist him in diagnosing electronic problems in instruments before and after any repair.

The oscilloscope allows a person to observe the waveform of an electronic equipment under service. Typically, there are two ports on an oscilloscope, one will be connected to the input and the other to the output source. By observing and comparing the two electrical waveforms, most electronic bugs can be found that way. A process of elimination to isolate the faulty component(s) is tedious but have to been done. By isolating, first at the board level, and then at sub-board levels, the faulty parts can be found. Modern equipment has little discrete components and isloating the faulty portions can be quite fast.

A DMM (Digital Multimeter) is a versatile measuring instrument that allows measurement of the various electrical parameters (voltage, current, resistance, etc) of a given circuit or component. It is normally used to check the bounds of the electrical parameters concerned.

The Fluke Scopemeter 199 combines both the oscilloscope and a DMM into a single unit.
