The mission to train 5 younger climbers from the CLIMB 2000 project for future expeditions as well as gel as " Everesters" for 2001 was successful. The team made climbs on Karly Tau (c.5500m) and Bayankol Peaks (c.5791m) but bad weather conditions thwarted the climb on the latter peak.
The trip saw some drama when one of the younger trainees collapsed from an acute bronchial spasm while on the mountain. Major avalanches, deep snow and tricky routefinding were highlights of the climbing in this challenging region.
Major sponsors for the combined CLIMB 2000 and Everest 2001 teams' expedition to Kazakstan were: Brands Essence of Chicken, Singapore Press Holdings, WL Gore & Associates, Singapore Pools, Singapore Sports Council, Apple.
Both these mountaineering projects are endorsed by the Singapore
Mountaineering Federation.
